Some stories don't start on a page. They start in the soul.

Mountain Alchemy: An Appalachian Soul PowerTale is the companion book to 2026 USA Fellow Aristotle Jones's album Appalachian Soul Power, born from the same place all of his work comes from: the hills, the heritage, and the hard-won wisdom of West Virginia.

Set in 1940, in a pre-WW2, rural Appalachia farm, this coming-of-age story is about survival, identity, faith, and the complicated bonds that hold communities together. Shown through the eyes of a young man standing at the threshold between innocence and manhood and told with grit, with warmth, with the kind of humor that only comes from people who've learned to laugh so they don't have to cry, this folk tale shows deep reverence for the unsung lives that shaped this region's soul.

The spiritual heartbeat driving this story is the catchy melody of the hymn Ain't No Day Worth Cryin' (Momma’s Hymn). The same song concludes the album itself, creating a powerful bridge between the novel and the musical tradition that inspired it.
These mountains have always held treasures most people never thought to look for.
This book is one of them.

About the Author
Aristotle Jones grew up in West Virginia and spent his summers working the land on his family farm, listening to his grandfather pick on the porch and sing gospel hymns learned in the segregated coal camps of the Mountain State. Those early sounds never left him. Today, as a singer-songwriter, storyteller, and 2026 United States Artists Fellow, he carries that inheritance forward through a body of work he calls Appalachian Soul, a genre-defying blend of soul, folk, jazz, blues, and gospel that retraces the routes of the Chitlin' Circuit and recovers the overlooked voices of Black Appalachian life.

Known as The Appalachian Soul Man, Jones radically challenges the commonly held stereotypes about Appalachia, rural culture, and contributions of participants of the Great Migration in shaping the pop culture explosion of the 20th Century . His research and creative work have earned him the 2023 Black Appalachian Storyteller Fellowship, the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Arts Living Traditions Experience Grant, and the 2024-2025 West Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship.
Mountain Alchemy is his debut book.
